The world championship in Trackmania was hosted for the 11th time. This time, 16 players travelled to Paris, France to battle it out for the title. And after two intense days of playing, we had our new world champion. This time it was Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc from the Czech Republic and Team Sampi. Following him was Marek ‘’tween’’ Pacher, who is also part of Team Sampi.
The road to the Grand Final
Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc was the last of the 16 players to qualify into the world championships. Already in Kappa’s first match in Paris, he had arguably the toughest match of the four quarter finals. He faced the world champion from 2012 Tim ‘’Spam’’ Lunenburg, Daniel ‘’DanikB’’ Brus and Marek ‘’tween’’ Pacher. Top 2 from that match would continue in the winner bracket, while bottom 2 would drop down to loser bracket. Kappa ended up 2nd in the match, behind his teammate tween. In the winner bracket semi final Kappa faced off with the two biggest favorites before the event; Carl-Antoni ‘’CarlJr’’ Cloutier from Team ZeratoR and Thomas ‘’Pac’’ Cole. He also faced his teammate Rick ‘’Dutchy’’ Jaspers from Team Sampi. CarlJr is the only player who has won the world championship more than once, and did so in 2013, 2014 and 2015. While Pac went into this world championship as the defending world champion. This didn’t stop Kappa from winning the semi final, and advancing into the winner bracket final. Here he faced CarlJr and tween once again, as well as Dennis ‘’Massa’’ Lotze from Berlin International Gaming. Kappa once again proved how well prepared he was for this event, and won this match as well. He was now ready for the grand final.
The Grand Final
After 16 players had tried their best to make it into the grand final of the Trackmania World Championship 2018, we were left with 4 players. Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc, Carl-Antoni ‘’CarlJr’’ Cloutier, Marek ‘’tween’’ Pacher and Thomas ‘’Pac’’ Cole. The grand final that was being played on the Ubisoft stage at Paris Games Week had over 6 000 spectators following online, and hundredths of people following it live at the event. The final was super close, and super intense. The players showed their full potential, and the level was super high. Nothing was decided until the end. The player who was able to pull it off in the end, was the czech player from Team Sampi; Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc (winning €2.500). His teammate Marek ‘’tween’’ Pacher (winning €1.300) made the day even better for Team Sampi, with finishing 2nd.
This grand final is arguably the greatest final we’ve ever seen at a world championship in Trackmania. Even the creator of Trackmania, Florent ‘’Hylis’’ Castelnérac, said that this grand final is what e-sport is about. Close battle between the very best players supported with a huge crowd cheering for their favorite player.
‘’I still don’t know what happend’’
One hour after Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc won it, I had the chance of talking with the new world champion. Kappa was in still shocked, and couldn’t believe what he had achieved.
‘’It’s been one hour, but I still don’t know what happend. But it feels good, I mean, I will probably appreciate it more later this evening, or the following days.’’
– Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc
The grand final was intense to watch as a spectator. But Kappa said that after a while he got used to the big stage, and didn’t feel it playing a factor for him.
‘’For me it was not (nerve wracking), because I was calm throughout the whole day. And I also managed to beat CarlJr and Pac yesterday, so I knew that it’s possible for me. And the only way to win a match like this is to stay calm in the most intense moments.’’
– Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc
Before the event Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc didn’t believe he could be able to win the world championship. Since he had been gone from april to september, he didn’t feel like he had the same level that he had before.
‘’After losing to Eger in the first qualifier, I was really upset about myself. And tried to improve as much as I could, to atleast qualify. That was my goal. I didn’t think of names like Pac and CarlJr.’’
– Martin ‘’Kappa’’ Krompolc
So how was he in fact able to step it up so much after not making the first open qualifier, and actually ending up beating everyone?
‘’Since I trained in the cyber cafe, my quality kept improving day by day.”
– Martin „Kappa“ Krompolc
With this achievement, Team Sampi becomes the 4th organization to ever make a double at a Trackmania World Championship. In the past, Team Dignitas, eSuba and Team Expert were able to pull it off. It is also noteworthy that this was our second offline event and second win.
