Two years ago, our player Erik ‘’EKI’’ Tammenpää won NHL World Gaming Championship. Last year, he tried to defend the title but ended up placing fourth. Now he has another chance, as this year’s online open play started this Wednesday, March 11th. “The way it ended last year, it still hurts. I’m hungry for that second gold,” Eki confesses.
“There’s always some new people who are looking for the challenge, so the competition could be tough,” says Eki about this year competition. “Also, I feel like the North Americans have taken a step up this year. So it will be really interesting to see what will happen in Vegas, and who will be there.”
European players who will qualify for second round, online play-in bracket, will play from April 11th to April 18th. “I play a lot more games before big tournaments. With music, it helps to boost my confidence,” said Eki on preparations for bigger matches. “I just like to listen to good music while I play. The genre doesn’t matter. It’s mostly rap and women pop singers, but Eminem is still #1 for me.”
The World Final will be played during the week of the 2020 NHL Awards, and the prize pool for winners holds more than $ 150,000. When we asked Eki whether he is nervous before tournaments or not, he answered: “Always a little bit. But during the games, not at all. The days before GWC I’m more nervous, but when I get there, it’s cool.” And we can’t wait to watch him claim the gold once again.
